Plum Creek Watershed Protection Plan
Where is the Plum Creek Watershed?
Plum Creek rises in Hays County north of Kyle and runs south through Caldwell County, passing Lockhart and Luling, and eventually joins San Marcos River at their confluence north of Gonzales County. Plum Creek is 52 miles in length and has a drainage area of 389 square miles.
What is the Plum Creek Watershed Protection Plan?
According to the 2008 Texas Water Quality Inventory and 303(d) List of Impaired Waterbodies, Plum Creek is impaired for bacteria throughout the entire segment. It also exhibits nutrient enrichment concerns for ammonia nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen and phosphorus.
These water quality issues, in conjunction with land use across the watershed, increasing urban development, oil and gas production in the area, and potential for agricultural nonpoint source pollution, were considered when Plum Creek was selected for this project.
