Established in 1874 as the far western stop of the Sunset Branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad, Luling was once known as the “toughest town in Texas”. Although the primary concern was in regards to agriculture and the railroad, the most significant events in Luling’s history was the discovery of oil by Edgar B. Davis. This discovery opened up an oilfield that was 12 miles long and 2 miles wide. The economy quickly shifted its focus to oil and almost completely disregarded any other outlets. The Luling Oil Field was producing over 15 million barrels of oil per year!
By maintaining that steady growth for over 60 years, Luling’s economy saw nothing but a continuous bright future. Take a pumpjack tour, visit the oil museum, see a potter at work, paddle the first Texas inland river trail, browse unique shops and antiques, take home fresh produce from the farmers’ markets, and eat some of the nationally recognized award winning bbq to find out that Luling offers a list of fun filled activities to see and do! We guarantee that you are in for a memorable time; come and join us!
