Established in 1874 as the far western stop of the Sunset Branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad, Luling was once known as the “toughest town in Texas”. Although the primary concern was in regards to agriculture and the railroad, the most significant events in Luling’s history was the discovery of oil by Edgar B. Davis. This discovery opened up an oilfield that was 12 miles long and 2 miles wide. The economy quickly shifted its focus to oil and almost completely disregarded any other outlets. The Luling Oil Field was producing over 15 million barrels of oil per year!
By maintaining that steady growth for over 60 years, Luling’s economy saw nothing but a continuous bright future.
