New Braunfels was officially settled on March 21, 1845 by Prince Carl of Solms Braunfels. His original intent was to travel on horseback through the territory of Texas to acquire land where locating the German immigrants would be most suitable. The first wagons of immigrants crossed the Guadalupe and were placed in an encampment erected on a bluff overlooking the Comal River. The founding of New Braunfels, often referred to as the “City of a Prince”, had a major impact upon the immediate area as well as opening up West Texas to a civilized economy.
The many artisans and craftsmen among the 6,000 settlers generated industry and commerce for the entire central Texas area. In addition to economic growth; this early colony brought religion, organized public education, and other socio-economic benefits to the area. Today, New Braunfels’ tourist industry is continuing to grow. From jumping into the wave pool at the top rated waterpark, Schlitterbahn, to the 10 day salute to sausage at Wurstfest, New Braunfels hopes that you will join in on the German-heritage celebrations and capture a bit of the historic past along with experiencing its charm!
